How to Avoid Single-Cell Holes

Avoid a single-cell hole when a placement would surround one empty cell on every available orthogonal side and the current tray cannot fill or clear it. A temporary gap is acceptable when a known piece fills it next or a completed row, column, or box removes its boundary.

Spot the trap before placement

Trace the outside edge of the piece preview. If placing it beside existing blocks forms a one-cell pocket, pause and inspect the tray. The pocket may accept a single cell, but spending that piece there can disrupt a more valuable intersection elsewhere.

The analyzer counts isolated holes after each simulated move. One hole subtracts eight raw points from the health formula, but the true cost depends on context. A hole inside a nearly complete box can disappear on the next clear and may be harmless.

Safe and unsafe gaps

An unsafe gap has no current filler, lies outside an active clear setup, and splits a useful lane. For example, surrounding the center of a row leaves two shorter segments that reject a five-cell bar even though eight of nine row cells appear manageable.

A safe temporary gap has a repair plan. If a single piece remains in the tray and the gap completes both a row and box, preserving it can be correct. The key is commitment: the repair piece must already exist, not be hoped for in a future random batch.

Recovery after a hole forms

First, stop building around the damaged area. Expand a clean region elsewhere and look for a line or box clear that removes one wall of the hole. Once a neighboring cell clears, the space is no longer isolated and larger pieces may reach it.

Do not sacrifice several flexible placements merely to erase one harmless gap. Compare the hole penalty with legal moves and hardest-piece fit. Recovery is about restoring options, not making the board visually perfect.

Classify a potential hole with three questions. Will the placement surround the cell orthogonally? Does the current tray contain a piece that can occupy it? Will an immediate row, column, or box clear remove at least one surrounding wall? Only when the first answer is yes and both repair answers are no should the gap receive the full practical warning.

An edge hole has fewer neighbors but can still be restrictive. At the top edge, occupied cells left, right, and below can isolate an empty cell because there is no playable approach from outside the board. The analyzer checks only neighbors that exist. This definition avoids treating the absent outside cell as open space that a piece could somehow use.

Practice recovery by building a hole beside a nearly complete column. First try filling the hole directly with a single cell, then try completing the column with a different piece so one wall disappears. Compare the remaining tray in both results. Direct repair may spend a uniquely flexible piece, while structural repair can reopen several cells and preserve that single for an intersection.

  1. Preview the piece boundary against existing cells.
  2. Identify any newly surrounded empty cell.
  3. Confirm a current piece or immediate clear can repair it.
  4. Choose a different origin when no repair exists.
