How to Keep the Center Open
Keep the center open when the current tray contains wide, tall, or irregular pieces that need several approach directions. Filling the center is safe when the move creates a clean clear or when the remaining pieces already have protected landing zones.
Working definition: Center control means preserving adaptable connected space near the middle of the board. It is not a rule that the central 3x3 box must stay empty.
Why central space is flexible
A piece near the center can extend left, right, up, or down, while an edge removes at least one direction. On a crowded board, that geometric advantage often becomes the difference between ten legal placements and none for an L-shape.
Measure this idea by counting legal placements before and after a candidate move. If an easy corner placement leaves the long bar with four lanes but a central placement leaves only one, the corner is safer even if the central move appears compact.
Five placement test
Use the analyzer to compare five plausible origins for the same square piece: center, each side midpoint, and a corner. Record total legal placements for the other two pieces. The best result is often near an edge during the opening, but the answer changes when an edge contains broken fragments.
Now repeat with a nearly complete central box. If the square finishes that box, the cells disappear and the center reopens. The temporary occupation is constructive because the clear restores flexibility immediately.
The counterexample
Avoiding the center mechanically can create a ring of occupied edge cells with thin, disconnected gaps. A central clear may be the only way to reconnect the board. Strategy should respond to the current tray and board, not a slogan.
The health ruler helps expose this tradeoff. Look at hardest-piece fit and largest open rectangle together. A move can reduce the rectangle while increasing difficult-piece fit through a clear, which may be a reasonable exchange.
Field notes and measurable checks
Measure center control with paired positions. In the first, place a 2x2 square at rows 4 and 5, columns 4 and 5. In the second, place it in a clean outer corner. Offer a long horizontal bar and a large L after each placement. Count fits rather than assuming the corner wins. If outer fragments already damage the edges, the central placement can sometimes preserve more real origins.
The central 3x3 box is especially useful when it is one move from clearing. Filling its final cells may briefly reduce the largest open rectangle, then remove all nine cells and restore a flexible crossing. That sequence shows why a snapshot before clear detection would be misleading. Evaluate the resolved board and the remaining tray, not the momentary occupied shape.
During recovery, open center space can connect smaller regions. Suppose the upper-left and lower-right areas each accept a square but no long bar. A column clear through the center may create one continuous vertical lane and increase hardest-piece fit even while total empty area changes little. Connected geometry explains the improvement more accurately than the phrase keep space open.

- Test whether the proposed move creates an immediate clear.
- Choose the placement that preserves useful connected space.
