Keep the finisher flexible. A setup that requires one rare orientation can occupy the board for many turns. If a single cell, short bar, or square can each complete the plan, the combo has several exits and creates less risk.
Points versus flexibility
Two completed units award 36 clear points plus a 12-point multi-clear bonus, before placement and streak points. That total is attractive, but compare health after the clear. A score gain does not compensate if both remaining tray pieces lose every legal origin.

Before building a combo, count finishing footprints rather than finished units. A row-column intersection with one shared gap accepts a single cell and is highly flexible when that piece is visible. A setup with four scattered gaps may theoretically complete two units but depend on one exact irregular shape. The second position is more occupied and less ready despite looking closer to a large clear.
Compare a two-clear turn at streak one with two separate single clears across consecutive turns. The combined turn receives its multi-clear bonus immediately, while consecutive turns build streak value. The exact score depends on piece sizes and existing streak. Use the published formula instead of assuming that grouping or separating clears always wins on points.
A safe combo has an exit. If the preferred finisher does not appear, at least one unit can be completed without sealing the board or wasting the remaining tray. Build partial units along clean boundaries, preserve more than one finishing origin, and avoid surrounding empty cells. Optionality lets a scoring setup coexist with survival rather than competing against it.
