Long Bar and L-Shape Placement Guide
Long bars need uninterrupted lanes, while L-shapes need a clean corner plus room along two directions. Protect at least one lane and one open corner when either family appears in the tray, then place flexible pieces without cutting those landing zones.
Working definition: A difficult shape is one whose geometry matches relatively few empty regions. Its risk comes from fit, not simply from cell count.
Preserve long lanes
A five-cell bar cannot bend around one occupied cell. Before placing a square or corner piece, scan every row and column for a contiguous five-cell run. Keep at least one that does not depend on a risky future clear.
Placing a long bar against an outer edge is often tidy, but it can also build a solid wall that blocks vertical pieces. Prefer a position that advances a row, column, or box without turning the board into parallel strips.
Keep corners geometrically clean
An L-shape needs both legs to fit. One notch near the bend can invalidate an otherwise large empty region. Inspect the exact orientation shown in the tray because Block Master does not rotate pieces.
A clean board corner is a natural home for an L, provided the placement does not isolate the cell inside its bend. In the middle, an L can bridge two partial clear setups, but it consumes highly flexible space and should deliver a clear or solve a constraint.
Emergency placement
When only one bar lane remains, reserve it even if the placement scores no clear. Use the other two pieces to remove obstacles around that lane or complete a unit it crosses. Survival has priority over a small immediate bonus.
If an L has no current fit, the run is over only when the other offered pieces also have no legal move. Sometimes a row or box clear from a smaller piece reopens the required corner. Check enabling moves before concluding the shape is impossible.
Field notes and measurable checks
A lane inventory is more precise than scanning for open space. For a five-cell horizontal bar, list every row containing a run of five or more empty cells and note overlapping origins within each run. A six-cell run offers two origins, while two separated three-cell runs offer none. The same total emptiness produces completely different fit counts.
For an L-shape, mark its bend first. The two legs determine which surrounding cells must be empty, and one blocked bend invalidates the origin before the rest of the region matters. Work from the exact orientation shown in the tray. Mirroring or rotating it mentally creates a landing zone that the current piece does not actually have.
A combined tray can create a protection conflict. A long bar may need the last clean row, while an L needs the only clean corner at one end of that row. Search for an enabling clear with the third piece rather than assigning both difficult shapes to overlapping space. If no enabling move exists, protect the shape with fewer alternative origins and place the other where it causes the least structural damage.
A repeatable decision routine
- Scan for contiguous lanes at least as long as the bar.
- Trace both legs and bend of the visible L orientation.
- Protect the scarcer landing zone.
- Use enabling clears before spending the difficult piece.
