Working definition: Three-piece planning is a short constraint check, not an attempt to solve the entire future game. Its goal is to guarantee the visible tray whenever a safe order exists.
Start with the hardest shape
Count legal placements for each offered piece. A long bar may fit twice, an L-shape six times, and a single cell dozens of times. Reserve the scarce bar lane first, even when another piece offers immediate points.
Hardest does not always mean largest. A small square can become restrictive on a board full of one-cell corridors, while a long horizontal bar remains easy if several rows are open. Use actual fit counts rather than piece area.
Order-sensitive worked set
Imagine a nearly full 3x3 box that accepts a square only after a short bar completes and clears the row beneath it. Bar first opens the square placement; square first overlaps occupied cells and fails. The same visible tray survives or ends based only on sequence.
Write a simple chain: piece A goes at origin one, which enables piece B at origin two, leaving piece C at origin three. If any origin becomes occupied or cleared in a harmful way, test another order before committing.
When flexibility beats a fixed script
Do not force a three-move script when the first move creates several safe alternatives. A clean clear may change the board so much that replanning is better than following the original route. Recheck after every move.

Field notes and measurable checks
There are six possible orders for three distinct pieces, but you rarely need to simulate all six. Eliminate orders whose first piece has no safe origin or destroys the only origin reserved for another shape. Then compare the remaining two or three plausible branches. This constraint-first approach is faster than trying every sequence and keeps attention on the actual failure risk.
Use a small notation for an order drill: A at r2c1, B at r6c4, C at r3c7. After simulating A, verify that B and C origins remain empty and inside the board. If A creates a clear, rebuild the coordinates on the resolved board because cells disappear but do not fall. The grid has no gravity, so row and column numbers remain stable.
Piece order and score can disagree. The first move in a safe sequence may score only placement points while preserving a double clear for the second piece. Taking a single clear immediately with a flexible piece can remove cells needed to support the larger finisher. Evaluate whether the clear enables or dismantles later placements instead of ordering moves by immediate score delta.
A repeatable decision routine
- Count legal placements for all three pieces.

- Test whether each earlier move preserves the later origins.
- Recheck the plan after every clear.
